Why once a year matters
Skin cancers can grow quietly. A spot that looks harmless today may change over the course of a year, and many early skin cancers cause no pain, no itching, and no bleeding. By the time a patient notices something is wrong on their own, the cancer may already be larger or deeper than it needed to be. A yearly screening closes that gap. It gives a trained eye the chance to spot a problem when it’s still small, easy to treat, and far less likely to leave a noticeable scar.
What you can’t see on your own
Most of us check the spots we can see in the mirror. But skin cancer doesn’t always play by those rules. It can show up on the scalp, behind the ears, on the back, between the toes, and in other places that are easy to miss. During a full body exam, your skin is checked carefully so nothing slips through.
Dermoscopy: a closer look
Dr. Arjun Dupati is a board certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon who is highly skilled in dermoscopy. Dermoscopy uses a special handheld device that magnifies the skin and reveals patterns that are invisible to the naked eye. This allows Dr. Dupati to tell the difference between a harmless mole and an early skin cancer with much greater accuracy, often avoiding unnecessary biopsies and catching dangerous spots that might otherwise be missed.
Who should get screened
Honestly, just about everyone benefits from a yearly skin check. You should be especially proactive if you have fair skin, a history of sunburns or tanning bed use, many moles, a family history of skin cancer, or a personal history of any skin cancer in the past.
The bottom line
A yearly skin cancer screening takes about fifteen minutes. It’s painless, it’s thorough, and it could quite literally save your life. If it’s been more than a year since your last full body skin exam, please call our office to schedule. Your skin is worth it.
