As a dermatologist, I care for many elderly patients, and over time, genuine bonds form. One of the hardest moments in my day is receiving a quiet message from a staff member letting me know that a patient has passed, along with a family’s gratitude for the care I provided.
We mark the patient as deceased in our EMR. A button is pressed. The chart is closed.
But that single click captures none of it. Not the decades they served in uniform, not the pride in their voice when they talked about their grandchildren, not the particular role they played at the center of a family that is now grieving.
Medicine continues to advance at a remarkable pace, and I welcome that. But as we implement each new tool and technology, I hope we keep the patient, the whole person, at the center of every decision we make.
