What to Know About Mohs Surgery
At Apollo Dermatology, our goal is to help you feel confident and well-prepared when it comes to caring for your skin. If Mohs surgery has been recommended, you may be wondering what it involves, why it’s performed, and how the process works.
What is Mohs Surgery?
Mohs surgery is a special technique used to treat certain types of skin cancer. It’s a highly precise and effective procedure where the surgeon removes the cancer in very thin layers, examining each layer under a microscope until all the cancerous cells are gone. This method allows us to remove as little healthy skin as possible while ensuring we get all the cancer cells.
How Mohs Surgery Works
Think of Mohs surgery as a step-by-step approach to removing skin cancer with the highest accuracy possible. Here’s the process, explained simply:
- Removal of the visible cancer – Dr. Dupati carefully removes the area of skin where the cancer can be seen.
- Layer-by-layer checking – The tissue is processed right on-site and examined under the microscope. Dr. Dupati looks at 100% of the edges and undersurface of that tissue to check if any cancer cells remain.
- Targeted removal – If cancer cells are still present, only the precise spot where they remain is removed. Healthy, normal skin is left untouched.
- Repeat as needed – This process is repeated until no cancer cells are seen.
Why Mohs Surgery is the Gold Standard
- Highest cure rate – By examining every edge, Mohs surgery offers the best chance of completely removing skin cancer.
- Saves healthy skin – Only the tissue that contains cancer is taken out, which means less scarring and faster healing.
- One-day procedure – The surgery and microscopic analysis are done the same day, right here in our office.
